Legal Intervention information for parents

It is for individual schools and local authorities to decide whether to use legal interventions in an case after considering the individual circumstances of a family, and it should be clear that it is the most appropriate intervention to change parental behaviour.

Formal and Legal interventions include:

  • Notice to Improve
  • Attendance Contract
  • Penalty Notice
  • Attendance Prosecution
  • Education Supervision Order
  • Parenting Order

Where they are used, it should be clear that it is the most appropriate intervention to change parental behaviour and in making the decision to use an intervention, headteachers and local authority officers should have regard to their safeguarding duties as set out in the statutory guidance on Keeping Children Safe in Education.
