Last year, a school contacted the Traveller Education Service as they had a pupil in Reception whose attendance was very low (32%) and their parent was struggling to get them into school.
The Traveller Education Service was able to offer support to both school and parent and visited the pupil in school weekly to provide 1:1 support which they really enjoy. The service also worked closely with both the Family Support Worker at school and the parent to promptly deal with any issues that occurred helping to develop a strong relationship of trust between school and home.
As a result of this intervention (which has continued this academic year), the pupil’s attendance has improved massively to 85% so far in Year 1. They are much happier and settled in school and making good progress and their parent feels supported.
Just a little extra help at the right time has made a huge difference!
