Formal and Legal Interventions
Most attendance concerns can be resolved through early support and partnership between families, schools and the Local Authority. Where attendance does not improve despite support being offered, formal or legal interventions may be considered.
Any decision to use these measures will take account of the individual circumstances of the child and family, the support already provided, and whether the intervention is likely to improve attendance.

Before deciding whether to use any formal or legal intervention, the Local Authority and school will consider:
- The child’s individual circumstances
- Any support already offered to the family
- Whether there are safeguarding or welfare concerns
- Whether the intervention is appropriate and proportionate
