Gypsy, Roma and Traveller History Month (#GRTHM2026) takes place throughout the month of June and has done since 2008.
Below is a video from The Traveller Movement about Gypsy, Roma and Traveller History Month and different groups of Travellers.
The theme this year is “Onwards with Hope”, focusing on the dreams and aspirations of Romany Gypsy, Roma, Irish Traveller, New Traveller, Showmen, and Liveaboard Boater communities.
To celebrate this, we have asked the children that we work with to draw a picture to show their own hopes and dreams for the future – look out for their wonderful creations on here at the end of June!
We recently asked the pupils that we support in schools to answer questions about their lived experience.
Overall, they shared quite positive experiences of school. However, a key theme emerged consistently: many feel that their Traveller culture, history, and community are not represented in lessons or wider school life.
Gypsy, Roma and Traveller History Month presents a valuable opportunity for schools, and other professionals working with Traveller children, young people and families, to address this, raise awareness and celebrate Traveller culture.
We encourage all schools, whether you have Traveller pupils or not, to participate in Gypsy, Roma and Traveller History Month to help children and young people learn about, understand and respect other cultures.
To support this, we have included a selection of links to useful resources below which include videos, work packs and assemblies. We hope these will help you plan meaningful activities and discussions.
