All the excitement of the theatre at a relaxed performance

Sutton Virtual School and Mousetrap Theatre Projects are committed to providing inclusive theatre for all, and this year, Sutton Virtual School were able to support a family to access Mousetrap Theatre Projects yearly relaxed performance of a popular West End Show, Matthew Bourne’s ‘The Nutcracker’ at Sadler’s Wells Theatre.

Relaxed performances are adapted performances to support people with autism, learning difficulties and other communication needs which provides an inclusive and enjoyable atmosphere for all. Some of these adaptations include sending specific resources prior to the performance consisting of social stories, sensory guides, colouring sheets and what to expect at the performance to allow all attendees to be fully prepared for the show. At the performance actors that are playing the villains/ scary characters come to the stage to introduce themselves and their characters to reassure theatre goers that they are playing a role.

The family that attended commented that the young person felt able to ask questions throughout and especially enjoyed the opening numbers, however his favourite part was the interval ice cream! Sutton Virtual School are pleased to have been able to offer such a wonderful opportunity and are hopeful that more families will be encouraged to attend next year.
