GRTHM 2023 Resources

Here are some useful links with resources to help promote / celebrate Gypsy, Roma and Traveller History Month:

Travellers Times created digital downloads to accompany the film ‘Roads from the Past’ including an assembly, lesson plan ideas and a Lifestyle, History and Culture FAQs pack to support non-Traveller teaching staff, which can be used throughout June as part of Gypsy Roma Traveller History Month, or at any time to raise awareness and embed inclusivity as part of your teaching.

‘Roads from the Past’ is a short animated film about the history of Gypsy, Roma and Traveller people in Britain, from ancient times up to the present day which aims answers lots of frequently asked questions.

Below are some other great, short animated videos that explain the history of different groups of Travellers and where they come from.

Twinkl have a range of FREE resources available to download:

Friends, Families & Travellers have participation packs available to download for their theme for Gypsy, Roma and Traveller History Month this year which is “Weaving Journeys: A celebration of Gypsy, Roma and Traveller lives, histories and cultures”.

The theme will focus on patterns of travel, spanning across the past, and leading to the future. It will ask and feature where Romany Gypsy, Roma, Irish Traveller and other nomadic communities have travelled before, and where people would like to travel next, as a celebration of cultures and traditions.

NASUWT – The Teacher’s Union – have some information and resources on their website but are focusing this year’s event on the Gypsy, Traveller, Roma, Showmen and Boaters’ (GTRSB) Pledge for Schools.
The Pledge is a set of suggested actions schools can sign up to help improve access, retention and outcomes in education and create an environment in which Gypsies, Roma, Showmen and Boaters can thrive and flourish.

Cognus’ Traveller Education Service created a Gypsy, Roma & Traveller History Assembly which is a PowerPoint presentation that can be used as an assembly for schools / classes to learn about Travellers and help celebrate GRTHM.
