Working together: How Speech & Language Therapist helped to secure external support for a family in need

At Cognus, we work alongside multiple agencies in and around the London Borough of Sutton to support our children and young people, and their families in many different ways. This includes letting families know about the different services available to them and helping them to access these. Here is a story from a Speech and Language Therapist who recently helped a family receive the extra help they needed, having struggled to cope throughout the pandemic.

“I recently spent time with a parent, across various visits and phone calls, to gather information for a complex referral. I wanted to make sure I truly understood the case, which meant learning about how the young person’s difficulties had affected the whole family’s daily life and wellbeing over the past two years. I used this information to put together a detailed referral for the pupil, which has now been accepted after numerous referrals had previously been refused. I was so excited when the family told me the good news, as the young person can now receive much-needed support. They are feeling more hopeful and have thanked me for my help, which means the world.”

The Therapies Team work with a huge number of children and young people in the Local Area developing their Speech and Language and Occupational Therapy skills to support their access to education and prepare them for adulthood.
