The session, “Safer Educational Visits for Autistic Children”, brought together expertise from Outdoor Education Advisor, Mick Bradshaw, Education Safeguarding Manager, Hayley Cameron, along with Advisory Teacher for Autism, Alex Silk. By combining safeguarding knowledge, specialist teacher knowledge and training videos from Andrew Hall (from Evolve), that contained his lived experience of being autistic, together we were able to offer Educational Visit Coordinators across Sutton practical strategies for risk assessments that keep neurodivergence front of mind.
Collaborating meant we shone a light on the complex realities of planning a safe trip. Themes covered included sensory differences, anxiety, and changes in routine, helping schools to recognise the importance of reasonable adjustments. This cross-team approach not only strengthened the training content but also modelled the very collaboration we encourage in schools: sharing perspectives to achieve the best outcomes for children.
The discussions were rich and thought-provoking, covering language, terminology, and the pressures staff face when planning safe, successful trips. At the same time, we celebrated the joy and lifelong memories that educational visits create for young people.
By joining forces, we delivered training that was more than the sum of its parts: practical, inclusive, and deeply rooted in both safeguarding and autism expertise. Together, we’re helping schools design visits that are safer, more accessible, and more rewarding for every learner.
