Read what families are saying about Cognus teletherapy

Carew Academy has worked in close partnership with the Therapy Team over the last three years’ since Cognus took over Therapy provision. There are currently three Occupational Therapists based at Carew who work across all three of our Pathways (Skills for Life, Skills for Work and Skills for Further Education) supporting children ranging from 7-18 years old.

Robert Watkins, Principal at Carew Academy, said:

“The therapists are crucial in supporting our students to live independently and develop a sense of self identity. They work in collaboration with teachers, both in class and through 1:1 and group sessions to support students’ development in a range of areas.  These areas link to students’ long term EHCP Outcomes and short term targets.

“It has been really interesting developing my understanding of Occupational Therapy since starting at Carew. Despite teaching for nearly 15 years, Occupational Therapy was very rarely mentioned in mainstream schools!

“This is why a key aspect of our work with the Sutton Trainee Teachers has been to introduce the importance of Occupational Therapy and its impact in the classroom, to hopefully give teachers and additional toolkit of techniques to use with students. In particular, strategies for emotional regulation can be really impactful in the mainstream classroom.

“At Carew, the OT team have worked to help staff use Zones of Regulation as common language across the school, this has had a noticeable impact on students ability to self-regulate and identify their own strategies to get back into the Green Zone!

“The therapists’ role is a really varied and interesting one, including looking at students’ fine and gross motor skill needs, which help students complete everyday tasks successfully.

“I would like to say a huge thank you to our OT team for the work they do to support our students.
