Trauma and Attachment

Foster care plays a pivotal role in the recovery process for many children exposed to trauma. The primary purpose of fostering is to provide an environment which mirrors a home or family and allows a child exposed to adversity, a space where they are safe and nurtured.

Foster carers have the unique opportunity to imprint upon a child’s life, changing developmental pathways that may have been altered through exposure to trauma. Carers provide a source of stimulation and aide in core areas of the developmental process for children such as; attachment formation and cognitive & social development. It is important to recognise that carer’s involvement in aspects of education, health, well-being, sharing in fun activities, or helping a child navigate through personal difficulties influences considerable their trajectories
